Brought together by a shared love of 1970s funk, St. Booty formed Bard College in the early 1990s. The 10-piece band featured Ian Zimmerman (vocals), Jodi Cornish (vocals), Ross Shain (bass), Ted Gannon (guitar), Rob Brunner (drums), Zach Smith (keyboards), Derek Brain (trumpet), John Durham (saxophone), Andy West (trombone), and Dave Tarica (part-time percussion player). They started off playing covers of artists such as Graham Central Station, Cymande, and Bahamian disco band T-Connection, but the group quickly began writing its own material. Between 1990 and 1993, St. Booty played concerts, dances, and parties at upstate New York schools including Bard, Vassar, Bennington, Skidmore, and Hamilton College. The band also performed regularly at New York City clubs, including Wetlands and SOBs. In 1992, the 10 members of St. Booty traveled to Tokyo and performed at Yoyogi National Stadium, representing the Unites States in an international college music festival.
